Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center has grown from humble beginnings into the largest hospital in the Novant Health system, bringing advanced, world-class comprehensive care near you.

  • 1888: Henry O. Lacy and Ladies Twin City Hospital Association volunteers group fundraise to create a hospital inside the Martin Grogan Home on North Liberty St.
  • 1892: Thanks to fundraising efforts, Twin City Hospital opens with 12 rooms, two wards and an operating room.
  • 1914: Modern Twin City Hospital is built at East Fourth Street.
  • 1964: Forsyth Memorial Hospital, owned and managed by Forsyth County, opens at its current location on Silas Creek Parkway.
  • 1984: County deeds the hospital to Carolina Medicorp, Inc.
  • 1980s:
    • Forsyth Memorial Hospital begins operating Medical Park Hospital (now named Novant Health Medical Park Hospital), and Forsyth Medical Center Hawthorne Outpatient Surgery Center (now named Novant Health Hawthorne Outpatient Surgery)
    • By decade's end, the hospital building itself has grown through the addition of a west tower.
  • 1997: Carolina Medicorp, Inc. and Presbyterian Healthcare in Charlotte, NC merge to form Novant Health.
  • 2002: Forsyth Medical Center adds a critical care wing, expanding the ability to care for those who are critically ill.
  • 2004: The emergency room doubles to more than 100 treatment bays.
  • 2007: The need for hospital beds leads to the construction of the north tower, bringing another 100 beds to the medical center. In addition, the Novant Health Conference Center is built at Forsyth Medical Center. This gift to the community offers a safe, open place for community groups to meet and host events.
  • 2017: Novant Health partners with Encompass Health to build Novant Health Rehabilitation Hospital, which offers rehabilitation services aimed at helping patients regain independence after experiencing a stroke, hip fracture, brain injury, amputation and other complex neurological or orthopedic condition.
  • 2021: Hospital breaks ground on a $222 million expansion to add a five-story, 193,000-square-foot critical care tower. Learn more about our expansion
