Family Medicine Residency
Welcome to the Family Medicine Residency Program in Wilmington, N.C. We are sponsored by Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC), an 855-bed hospital that serves as both the general hospital for the community and the referral center for southeastern North Carolina.
Our program consists of six physician faculty who practice full spectrum Family Medicine, as well as a Behavioral Medicine specialist, and a PharmD.

About our Family Medicine Residency program
Our Family Medicine residency program trains outstanding primary care physicians dedicated to serving the needs of patients in our communities.
The Novant Health NHRMC Family Medicine Residency program is accredited by the ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition status. We are community-based program affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Our faculty and residents originally hail from all over the United States. More than 50% of our graduates stay in our immediate area, and 70% choose to stay in North Carolina.
NHRMC Rural Family Medicine training track
We are pleased to offer a Rural Family Medicine training track designed to provide residents with specialized training to care for patients in rural and underserved communities. Residents will work in the Black River Health Services (BRHS) clinic in Burgaw, N.C., located adjacent to Novant Health Pender Medical Center – the only hospital in Pender County. Burgaw is just 26.4 miles north of our main training site at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
The Rural Family Medicine Residency training track provides access to the robust full-scope Family Medicine curriculum along with the unique experience of providing rural inpatient and outpatient care. These experiences help residents form deep connections within their communities while allowing for diverse learning opportunities and ensuring much-needed care for underserved patients in our region.

Applying to our residency program
Our program will remain virtual for our 2024-2025 interview season. After the holidays, there will be an opportunity for applicants to come to Wilmington for an in-person second look.
The choice to come to the second look or not will not affect how the applicants are ranked or evaluated.
All interviews for the Family Medicine Residency program and the Rural Family Medicine training track will be conducted from October to January. We will complete the final review of applications in ERAS no later than November 3. The final interview date offered will be January 9th . Applicants will have the opportunity to interview for the main program and rural track.
The Family Medicine Residency program at Novant Health – Wilmington, will be using the signaling process for the 2024-2025 recruitment season. As you are considering where you would like to interview, please plan to signal the programs that you are the most interested in interviewing, regardless of prior interaction or clinical experience with the program.
