What’s the purpose of a sleep study?

What to Expect During Your Sleep Study

Before your visit

Your sleep specialist may ask you to avoid caffeine and certain medications. You will be instructed what to wear and what to bring.

During your visit

To any questions you may have. Your sleep study will take place in a private room and begins with small sensors being attached to your head and body to monitor brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rate and breathing. This process is completely pain-free.

You will be able to get settled in bed and the room will be kept dark and quiet for a sleep-friendly environment. During the night, a sleep technologist will monitor your sleep activity and record data from a separate room. You will be able to communicate with your technologist and use the restroom as needed.

After your visit

Once your sleep study is complete, you should schedule a follow-up visit with your sleep clinic if you don’t already have an appointment scheduled for within about two weeks from your sleep study. Your sleep specialists will discuss the study results with you at this appointment and recommend treatments based on the findings.
