Patient-focused therapy that empowers you

After stroke treatment, our primary goal is to get you back to your daily life. Your stroke rehabilitation team will work with you to create a comprehensive therapy plan structured around the type and severity of your stroke. That may include a combination of physical and speech therapies as well as counseling both during your hospital stay and on an outpatient basis.

Our stroke recovery program empowers you to rebuild your strength and coordination through a controlled and well-defined process. We use wireless technologies like the Bioness H200 and L300 to help restore function and mobility in your hands, arms, legs and feet.

If you have trouble speaking, swallowing or processing language, our speech pathologists will help you rebuild those skills.

Your stroke recovery treatment may also include medication management to lower the risk of future occurrences. Medicines your physician may prescribe include:

Blood pressure medication
ACE inhibitors
Beta-blockers
Anti-clotting drugs
Antidepressants
Muscle-relaxing drugs such as Botox® injections

Coping through stroke recovery stages

We can provide professional support and educational resources to help you and your family cope with any challenges you encounter during your recovery after a stroke. These include individual and family psychological services to help boost your spirits and confidence both during and after your hospital (inpatient) stay.

This support can be particularly helpful as you work toward becoming more independent through stroke rehabilitation exercises aimed at helping you perform everyday tasks like dressing, cooking and bathing.

Young Stroke Aneurysm Support Group (virtual): Young Stroke Aneurysm Support Group | American Stroke Association

The Young Stroke and Aneurysm Survivors, is for people between the ages of 18 and 50, as well as their family members and caregivers. These virtual meetings are an opportunity to receive valuable health information and ask questions in a small, comfortable group setting.

The virtual meetings take place every 4th Thursday of every month, except December, from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM Eastern

Our Stroke Support Group and Aphasia Conversation Group can help you gain confidence on your journey to recovery.

The Stroke Support Group Novant Health New Hanover Rehabilitation Hospital welcomes stroke survivors, caregivers and loved ones. Guest speakers cover topics such as exercise and wellness opportunities, stroke treatment, prevention, and adjustments following a stroke. The Stroke Support Group meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 2 p.m. via Zoom or in person.

Aphasia Conversation Group is for those who have been diagnosed with aphasia and their caregivers. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the area of the brain that controls language, expression and comprehension of language. We invite you to join our weekly Aphasia Conversation Group. The Aphasia Conversation Group meets the first Monday of every month at 1 p.m. Join us via Zoom or at a planned outing to become comfortable in your surroundings once again.
