Effective and safe nonsurgical treatments
Surgery can be effective for weight loss, but it isn't for everyone, and it isn't your only option. Novant Health offers a variety of effective nonsurgical weight loss treatment options, including:
- Meal replacement: This treatment involves substituting regular meals with a combination of lower-calorie foods and liquids or liquids only.
- Weight loss medicine: Certain FDA-approved medications for weight loss suppress your appetite and release hormones that make you feel full or prevent the absorption of fat from foods you eat.
Surgical options for weight loss
If you're eligible for a surgical procedure, bariatric surgery is a successful way to begin your weight loss journey. Bariatric surgery offers many benefits, such as:
- Reversing or decreasing symptoms of medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer and sleep apnea
- Improved mood and more restful sleep
- Higher energy levels
- Less joint and back pain
Novant Health provides various bariatric surgeries, including techniques that reduce your stomach size, malabsorption methods that reduce the calories your body absorbs and revisional procedures when other surgeries don't work. Our experienced team will help you determine which approach is best for your situation.
Is weight loss medication right for me?
Maintaining a healthy weight reduces your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and other conditions. While surgery may be the best option for some, you may be able to control your weight through medication. We offer a variety of options designed to suppress appetite, control food cravings and address binge eating. Some can also keep your body from absorbing fats in the foods you eat.
Most prescription weight loss medications are for adults 18 and older, but certain medications are available for teens starting at 16 years. Check with your healthcare provider to see if weight loss medication is the right solution for you.
